Creating a Mother is about investigating where identity forms within a person becoming a mother. Through both archiving and re-imagining images I’m tracing the memories and generational trauma that passes through us and how those layers throughout time create how we view mothers and how we view ourselves as mothers. Time becomes compounded within us and the abjection that came before us through our own mothers is still with us, and will be passed on again. Meaning, there is no difference within identity through time or generation. We are all chasing the promise and running from horror. What my mother experienced from her mother ; her memories - both lived and viewed through media- are within me creating my identity. My memories are not mine, they are hers and her memories are her mothers and so forth. Living through other’s memories creates the feeling that Sigmund Freud called “uncanny” which he said “is that class of the terrifying which leads back to something long known to us, once very familiar can become uncanny and frightening.” Jui-Ch’i Liu writes “a haunted house, arousing feeling associated with a place both familiar and unfamiliar, could be a metaphor of the womb as the former home of human beings.” The images are both staged and archived bleeding together without any differentiation. They seem to mimic one another- a continual role play. I’m hoping to create the compounding of time within the small space. The images placed like floating memories which leads to the projected video ; trying to outrun the continuum of identity through the women in my family and as it’s impossible to do so, the video begins again and again and again.
